Trump criticizes Apple Daily owner's arrest

Aug 14, 2020

Washington DC (USA), Aug 14: US President Donald Trump has criticized the arrest earlier this week of the founder of the Apple Daily, a Hong Kong newspaper that is often critical of China.
Hong Kong police arrested media owner Jimmy Lai and nine other pro-democracy activists on Monday on suspicion of violating the new national security law for the territory.
The 10 were later released on bail.
Trump said on Thursday that "it's a terrible thing," and he hates to see "what happened to Hong Kong."
He also referred to the executive order he signed last month to end the preferential economic and trade treatment the US had granted Hong Kong for years.
He indicated that the measure would deal a huge blow to China and Hong Kong.
The remark was Trump's first direct criticism of China over Lai's arrest. It followed critical comments by other members of his administration, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
