Erdogan declares state of emergency in quake-hit regions

Istanbul (Turkey), February 8: Turkish President RecepTayyip Erdogan has declared a state of emergency for three months in 10 provinces worst hit by the powerful earthquake that has killed thousands across Turkey and Syria.
"In order to ensure that the search and rescue and subsequent work is carried out quickly, I have decided to declare a state of emergency on the basis of the powers conferred on me by Article 119 of the Constitution," Erdogan said on Tuesday.
The corresponding laws are being prepared, he said.
Over 50,000 rescuers are working non-stop to save people and foreign aid teams are joining them, according to the president. "This is one of the biggest disasters of our region and the world, not only in the history of our republic," Erdogan said. (dpa)
