Oct 22, 2023

Colombo [Sri Lanka], October 22: Four deminers in Sri Lanka were wounded on Saturday when several mines exploded, the country's police spokesman said on Sunday.
Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa told the media that the incident happened in Mullaitivu in northern Sri Lanka, adding that the deminers were clearing unexploded mines from the past war zone when two explosions damaged a bulldozer and wounded four deminers.
The injured were undergoing treatment at a local hospital, and the police have conducted investigations, he said.
Thalduwa said when the war ended in 2009, there were about 1.6 million mines in many parts of northern Sri Lanka. Thanks to the work of deminers, only about 15 square kilometers are to be cleared of mines at present.
