Apr 16, 2026

Barcelona [Spain], April 16: Carlos Alcaraz has pulled out of the Barcelona Open with a wrist injury, organizers said on Wednesday. The Spaniard won his opening round match on Tuesday against Otto Virtanen but was troubled by the injury. He has now had to withdraw from his home tournament, giving second-round opponent Tomas Machac a walkover. Alcaraz lost his number-one ranking after being beaten by big rival Jannik Sinner in Sunday's Monte-Carlo Masters final and will not be able to go back to the summit for the time-being. Italian Sinner is resting this week. Whether Alcaraz will be fit for the Madrid Masters starting on April 22 is unclear. The French Open, where he is defending champion, begins on May 24. (DPA)
