Belgium faces nationwide strike as unions protest austerity measures

Brussels [Belgium], May 21: Public services across Belgium ground to a halt on Tuesday as unions launched a 24-hour general strike to protest government austerity policies, causing widespread disruption to transport networks and the closure of key institutions.
The strike was organized by the country's socialist union, CGSP, and targeted budget cuts affecting public sector pensions and social security reforms. Union leaders argue that the measures disproportionately affect vulnerable groups and threaten the foundations of Belgium's welfare system.
Public transport in Brussels was heavily disrupted, with only a limited number of lines in operation. National rail services were also affected, with disruptions beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday and continuing through to the final trains on Tuesday. Approximately four out of seven trains were maintained during the strike period.
The CGSP has urged the government to prioritize public investment over fiscal consolidation. The European Commission reported on Monday that Belgium's budget deficit rose to 4.5 percent of GDP in 2024 and is projected to reach 5.4 percent in 2025. The center-right coalition government has pledged to reduce spending to comply with EU fiscal rules.
The CGSP has also announced a second demonstration for Thursday, this time involving workers in the non-profit sector, including healthcare, education, and social services. Protesters are expected to march from Brussels North Station to Central Station, calling for improved pension benefits and greater protections for work-life balance.
