May 29, 2025

Brasilia [Brazil], May 29: Brazilian Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro said on May 27 that the country recorded many new cases of bird flu in wild animals in Mateus Leme City, Minas Gerais State.
At a hearing in the Brazilian Senate, Mr. Favaro affirmed that these cases do not affect commercial activities. The minister said that the above incident is a "natural" development because Brazil is home to many migratory birds - which often carry many disease-causing viruses , according to Reuters. In addition, Brazilian authorities are also investigating about 10 new suspected cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) at a commercial farm in the city of Anta Gorda in the state of Rio Grande do Sul (southern Brazil).
Most recently, Brazil announced on May 16 that an outbreak of bird flu had occurred in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, resulting in the culling of 17,000 poultry. In response, the Brazilian government declared a 60-day animal health emergency and increased quarantine measures. More than 20 countries have ordered a temporary suspension of imports of poultry products from Brazil.
