Brazil's top court to rule on coup charges against Bolsonaro

Mar 26, 2025

Buenos Aires [Argentina], March 26: Brazil's Supreme Court on Tuesday began considering charges against former president Jair Bolsonaro for planning a coup against his successor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Bolsonaro, who was in office between 2019 and 2022, will face trial if the court agrees with the evidence presented by the prosecuting authority.
The former president has denied the allegations. The court is expected to announce its decision on Wednesday.
Prosecutors allege that the former paratrooper planned a coup along with others to stay in power after losing the October 2022 election.
Bolsonaro supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília on January 8, 2023, causing considerable damage.
The images broadcast around the world recalled the storming of the US Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 after he had lost an election to Joe Biden. Bolsonaro's rhetorical and governing style has led to his being called the "Tropical Trump."
