Bandar Seri Begawan [Brunei], December 17: Brunei launched a one-gigabit-per-second (Gbps) fiber broadband proof of concept by the telco industry, aiming to transform the country into a smart nation, local media reported on Friday.
According to the Borneo Bulletin, Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN), the Sultanate's wholesale telecommunication service provider to both national and international clients, said that telecommunication industry stakeholders "are collaborating to provide accessible and high-quality broadband service for the nation that is also future-proof."
The UNN said that the six-month trial was launched collectively by telecommunication industry stakeholders, including service providers, Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam and Darussalam Assets, the holding company of government-linked corporations.
The trial was also aimed at bringing innovation and transformation in consumer and industrial uses with high-speed connectivity.
The trial will involve 90 participants selected by the service providers to use fiber broadband with a speed of up to 1 Gbps. The participants will provide regular feedback to help the industry identify room for improvement.
