Cape Verde invests 5.4 mln USD in rural projects with focus on women

Praia [Cape Verde], February 15: The government of Cape Verde on Friday launched a new phase of the Rural Socio-Economic Opportunities Promotion Program, with an investment of 5.4 million U.S. dollars in agriculture, livestock, and fishing projects, with a special focus on women.
"For this new phase, the investment amounts to 5.4 million U.S. dollars," said program coordinator Jaime Pina on the sidelines of the launch ceremony in Praia.
During the new phase (2025-2027), 23 structural projects will be implemented in the fields of agriculture, livestock, fishing, and water supply, "with the prospect of benefiting 43,000 people," Pina stated.
The program will also continue investing in training, with a particular focus on women and heads of households in rural areas, to enhance resilience to climate change.
"We have achieved good results with various programs. What we need now is to build on these results, consolidate them, and move forward with new initiatives," said Cape Verde's Minister of Agriculture and Environment Gilberto Silva, praising the "excellent cooperation" with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
IFAD's country director Ann Turinayo highlighted the long-standing collaboration with the government since 1967 to ensure sustainability and food and nutrition security for rural communities.
"Our partnership with the government is guided by the country's strategy, by growth that has been extended until 2026, and therefore, we will still need to define what we will essentially undertake together," she explained.
