China reacts to the US Vice President's remarks

Apr 10, 2025

Beijing [China], April 9: A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on April 8 responded to comments by US Vice President JD Vance when talking about the White House's tariff policy. The Guardian reported in an interview with Fox News last week, Mr. J.D. Vance asked: "What has the globalized economy brought to the United States? "Essentially, it's based on two principles - including taking on a huge debt to buy things that other countries make for us."Vance then added: "To be clear, we borrow money from Chinese farmers to buy what these Chinese farmers produce. It's not a recipe for economic prosperity, it's not good for lowering costs, it's not good for jobs in the United States."Responding to Vance's statement, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian stressed on April 8: "It is regrettable to hear theUS president make such ignorant and disrespectful remarks. Pressure, intimidation and blackmail are not the right way to deal with China."The above statement by Mr. JD Vance also created a harsh reaction from internet users in China. CNN quoted a comment from social media user Weibo as saying: "We may be farmers but we have the world's best high-speed rail system, the most powerful logistics and the leading artificial intelligence (AI) technology, self-driving cars and drones. Isn't that kind of farmer very impressive?"The above development has further highlighted the tension between the world's two leading economies on the issue of tariffs. Recently, the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump will raise tariffs to 104% on goods imported from China. Beijing has not yet taken concrete measures to respond to the recent move from Washington, in addition to the previous 34% tariff on US goods in response to Trump's reciprocal tariffs. At a press conference on April 8, spokesman Lin Jian stressed that China will continue to take tough measures to protect the country's legitimate development rights, Reuters reported. He affirmed that if the United States resolutely conducts a trade war, China "will fight to the end."Source: Thanh Nien Newspaper
