Croatia re-nominates Dubravka Suica for European Commission

Aug 21, 2024

Zagreb [Croatia], August 21: The Croatian government has re-nominated Dubravka Suica, the current vice president of the European Commission, as member of the commission for the 2024-2029 term, on the basis of her achievements and political legitimacy, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Tuesday.
Plenkovic said Suica is adept in her role and has extensive experience within the Commission, especially highlighting Suica's strong cooperation with the Croatian government and her work on issues crucial to Croatia.
However, Plenkovic did not reveal which portfolio Suica will assume, but hinted that Croatia has ambitions for certain portfolios of the European Commission and is lobbying in this direction.
"We will first have to wait and see the overall architecture of the new Commission," Plenkovic added.
Suica, a former mayor of Dubrovnik in southern Croatia and member of both the Croatian and European parliaments, has served as the Commissioner for Demography and Democracy.
Speaking to the parliament's European Affairs Committee, she discussed her past work and the priorities for the next European Commission.
Croatian opposition lawmakers have criticized Suica, claiming that she had not achieved anything "tangible" in terms of demography and democracy during her current term at the European Commission. Suica refuted the allegations, saying that these were areas where change could not be seen overnight and that she considered it a success that demography had become an important issue at the EU level.
