Doha to host 10th World University Weightlifting in September

Feb 18, 2026

Doha [Qatar], February 18: Qatar will host the World University Weightlifting Championships - Doha 2026 from September 8 to 12, 2026, under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), with wide participation from federations and universities from around the world.
The Doha edition holds special significance as it is the tenth edition of the championships. The last edition was held in 2018 before the championships were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which impacted the global sporting calendar for several years. The return of the championships in Doha confirms the resumption of this important international event on the global university sports calendar.
The championship is expected to see the participation of more than 200 male and female athletes competing in eight weight categories for both male and female students. The competitions are anticipated to be intense and exciting, especially given the participation of several students who compete internationally in weightlifting and represent their countries in continental and world championships, reflecting the high technical level of the tournament.
The competitions will be held at the Student Center in Education City, Doha, within a comprehensive organizational framework that meets the highest international standards and provides an ideal environment for the athletes and participating delegations, both technically and logistically.
This championship is the second global event organized by the Qatar University Sports Federation since its official launch in 2023, following its hosting of the 3x3 University Basketball Championship. This is part of a clear strategy aimed at enhancing Qatar's presence on the international university sports map and solidifying its position as a global sports hub. In this context,
His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi, President of the Qatar University Sports Federation, affirmed that hosting the tenth edition of the championship represents a significant milestone in the Federation's journey and embodies the growing international confidence in the State of Qatar's organizational capabilities. He noted that the event aligns with the Federation's vision of supporting university sports and opening broader horizons for student athletes to compete at the highest levels.
Rashid Saeed Adhaiba, Secretary-General of the Federation, explained that preparations are proceeding according to a comprehensive organizational and media plan aimed at delivering an exceptional edition.
