Ex-Polish Prime Minister Morawiecki forms new bloc amid power struggle

Jul 30, 2026

Warsaw [Poland], July 30: Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced on Wednesday that he had formed a new parliamentary group following a decisive split in the country's main conservative opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS).
The group, called Development Plus, includes 40 members of parliament and one senator, Morawiecki told reporters in Warsaw. "We want to work for Poland's development and its conservative identity," he said.
The right-wing populist PiS, which governed Poland from 2015 to 2023, carried out sweeping judicial reforms that brought it into conflict with the European Commission over the rule of law. The party lost the 2023 parliamentary election and has since been the country's largest opposition force.
Before the breakaway, PiS held 181 seats in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, and 33 seats in the Senate.
The announcement follows a power struggle between PiS founder Jarosław Kaczynski, 77, and Morawiecki, 58. (DPA)
