France to tighten museum security after theft

Jul 30, 2026

Paris [France], July 30: France's government plans to strengthen protection for some of the country's most vulnerable cultural treasures following the daytime theft of a unique Celtic gold artefact from a museum in the Burgundy region.
Particularly sensitive objects will be temporarily removed from public display and stored in secure locations until stronger safeguards against theft are in place. The move follows Friday's break-in at the museum in Châtillon-sur-Seine, where thieves stole the Vix torque, an elaborately crafted gold necklace dating back about 2,500 years and regarded as one of most important Celtic artefacts.
