Fresh round of talks with US set for Tuesday in Geneva: Iran

Feb 16, 2026

Tehran [Iran], February 16: The next round of talks between Iran and the United States is scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva, the Iranian state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday. The Iranian delegation led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi flew out on Sunday, it said.
This is the second round of negotiations after both countries resumed talks on February 6. Like last time, Oman is set to mediate. The talks will centre on Iran's controversial nuclear programme, with the US intent on preventing the country from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Iran's leadership has signalled that it is willing to limit its nuclear programme, but is demanding that harsh economic sanctions are lifted in return. Tehran has ruled out negotiations on other topics such as its missile programme or support for anti-Israeli groups.
According to IRNA, Araghchi is also planning to hold talks in Switzerland with the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi.
In January, Iran brutally suppressed mass protests. The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says more than 7,000 people died in the crackdown.
US President Donald Trump threatened to intervene militarily in the country and increased the US military presence around Iran.
Washington has now sent a second aircraft carrier to the region as an additional threat.
Concerns are growing that the talks could fail, triggering a fresh war.
