Dec 30, 2022

Port Louis [Mauritius], December 30: A tragedy at sea occurred on the morning of December 29 at Flamingo Island, BambousVireux in the southeast region of the country at a place commonly known as Diamant. A seven meter long boat with five fishermen on board capsized. Immediately the five men swam to shore. One of the fishermen went to the fisheries guard office to raise the alarm after having noticed that one of them was missing. The search operation carried out shortly after allowed the men of the National Coast Guard (NCG) to recover the torso of Mike Antonio Jean Lise, 39 years old in a depth of twenty-five meters of water. This after the body was spotted by the police helicopter that flew over the area.
It was at 5:43 am on Thursday, December 29 that a request was made to the fisheries guard office concerning the disappearance of this inhabitant of Bois des Amourettes. A Search and Rescue (SAR) operation was initiated by the men of the NCG as soon as the information was relayed. A patrol at sea by inflatable boat made it possible to find the boat partially submerged in the water at a place called Diamant.
The police helicopter was called in for logistical support to assist the NCG in the search at sea. Thus, around 10:00 am on December 29, a part of the body of this missing fisherman, the torso, was found in the water. The men of the NCG then went to this place to remove this body in a depth of twenty-five meters.
Dr.Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the forensic department of the police attributed the death of the victim to asphyxiation due to drowning. Thus the thesis that he was eaten by sharks after drowning is retained.
