Housing issues overshadow Australian election campaign

Apr 14, 2025

Sydney [Australia], April 14: During the election campaign in Ho Chi Minh City. Perth on April 13, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his ruling Labor allies pledged that if they are re-elected, they will work with contractors to implement a plan to build housing exclusively for first-time homebuyers.
Accordingly, the government announced plans to spend AUD 10 billion (about 160,000 billion VND) on grants and loans to build up to 100,000 homes nationwide, contributing to solving the housing crisis in the country, according to Reuters.
In addition, the Australian government has promised to partially guarantee loans from first-time homebuyers, and has pledged to build 1.2 million homes by 2030 to ease cost pressures, which have caused discontent due to a lack of affordable housing.
Prime Minister Albanese's new plan comes as housing policy is the focus of debate among parties in Australia in order to attract the support of voters ahead of the general election in May.
For his part, Petter Dutton, leader of the Liberal Party and leader of the opposition Liberal-National Australia coalition, yesterday pledged tax cuts and introduced a competitive housing scheme that would allow first-time homebuyers to deduct mortgage payments from income tax.
