Italy investigates manslaughter after yacht sinking kills British billionaire

Aug 25, 2024

London [UK], August 25: Chief prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said investigators had found that the cause of the sinking was not the weather but the crew's behavior and handling of the ship. He said the investigation was not aimed at any individual.
"There are many possibilities of law violations. It could be the captain. It could be the entire crew. It could be the person in charge of supervision. We are evaluating all the factors to see who is responsible for this incident," CNN quoted Mr. Cartosio as saying.
Mr. Cartosio also said that investigators will focus on evaluating safety procedures for passengers on the cruise ship and do not rule out weather factors.
The incident killed 7 people. In addition to billionaire Lynch - known as the " Bill Gates " of England, his daughter Hannah (18 years old) was also among the victims who died when the yacht capsized and sank while anchored off Porticello, Sicily (Italy).
Prosecutor Raffaele Cammarano said the dead may have been asleep at the time of the storm and could not have escaped from the ship. He said authorities could not confirm whether some of the ship's doors were open, which could help explain why the ship sank so quickly in a matter of minutes.
The investigation team still has many questions about the sinking of the luxury yacht. Previously, the manufacturer described the superyacht, which has a 75-meter aluminum mast, as "unsinkable".
