Lao gov't permits school closures amid soaring temperatures

Vientiane [Laos], April 30: Laos' Ministry of Education and Sports has told school administrators to consider temporarily suspending classes if necessary so that children do not suffer during the current high temperatures.
The ministry suggested the administrators keep track of weather forecasts and caution that temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above may affect the health of children, according to an instruction issued by the ministry on Monday.
School principals were told to take precautionary measures to prevent children and teachers from suffering in the current high temperatures.
The ministry also advised that lengthy outdoor activities be avoided during times of extreme heat.
According to a forecast by the weather bureau of Laos on Monday, most areas in Laos are expected to undergo peak temperatures ranging from 39 to 43 degrees Celsius from April 29 to May 5.
