New York [US], August 27: Mexican drug lord Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada pleaded guilty in a US court on Monday, admitting that over several decades he helped build and run one of the world's most powerful drug organizations, the Sinaloa cartel.
A New York court convicted him of conspiracy to commit organized crime and of leading a criminal organization. Zambada acknowledged that his cartel was responsible for numerous killings, including of bystanders, during the drug wars of the 1980s and 1990s. Zambada said he recognized the harm his actions had caused and apologized.
Over decades, the cartel is believed to have smuggled at least 1.5 million kilograms of cocaine into the United States.
