Mexico arrests Hungarian drug trafficker

Apr 19, 2026

Mexico City [Mexico], April 19: Security forces in the Mexican resort city of Cancun have arrested one of Europe's most wanted criminals, the Mexican security ministry announced on Saturday. The 48-year-old Hungarian was sentenced in his home country to six years in prison for drug trafficking. His extradition is now being prepared, the ministry said.
The European police agency Europol had listed the man as one of Europe's most wanted criminals. State and federal authorities in a joint statement said Balla was located thanks to information shared by Hungarian security agencies, as well as intelligence and investigative work. They said he was turned over to Mexico's immigration agency "to determine his immigration status and continue his controlled deportation process to Europe."
Mexico is a major hub for international drug trafficking. Mexican cartels control large parts of the cocaine smuggling from South America to the United States and Europe as well as the production of synthetic drugs.
