Jan 22, 2025

Seoul [South Korea], January 22: Yonhap reported that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared before the Constitutional Court on January 21 to answer questions related to the declaration of martial law.
This is Mr. Yoon's first appearance since the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) executed an arrest warrant in the middle of last week.
"I have lived with a firm belief in free democracy since I grew up, especially during my time serving the public," Yoon told the Constitutional Court judges, asking the court to consider his case fairly and with goodwill. According to Yonhap, Yoon is the first sitting president to attend his own impeachment trial.
President Yoon was impeached by the National Assembly of South Korea on December 14, 2024, and was suspended from office pending an investigation into allegations of rebellion and abuse of power through the declaration of martial law. From the date of the case, the Constitutional Court has 180 days to decide whether to remove him from office or reinstate him.
