North Korea successfully test-fired hypersonic missile

Oct 23, 2025

Pyongyang [North Korea], October 23: On October 23, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) announced that it had successfully test-launched two hypersonic missiles, calling them a "new important weapon system" that will help strengthen Pyongyang's deterrence capabilities.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said on October 23: "Two supersonic missiles were launched from Ryokpho district, capital of Pyongyang, in the northeast direction, hitting the predetermined target in the Kwesang plateau in North Hamgyong province."
KCNA added that the test conducted by the North Korean Rocket Force Department on October 22 was part of a defense capability development program, aimed at "enhancing the sustainability and effectiveness of strategic deterrence against potential adversaries."
Earlier, the South Korean military said North Korea had launched multiple short-range ballistic missiles in a northeast direction on the morning of October 22, according to Yonhap News Agency.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un was not present at the missile test launch. Pak Jong-chon, member of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, and other officials observed the event.
Mr. Pak stated that "the new advanced weapon system is a clear demonstration of the DPRK's continuous upgrading of its technical capabilities for self-defense," and affirmed that Pyongyang will continue to strengthen its deterrence and defense power. He described the tested weapon system as having "new strategic value."
This is the first ballistic missile launch by North Korea since South Korean President Lee Jae-myung took office in June, as well as the first test in about five months. The test took place less than a week before South Korea hosts the APEC Summit in Gyeongju City from October 31 to November 1.
