Only two Eredivisie players in Dutch World Cup squad of surprises

May 28, 2026

Doha [Qatar], May 28: Ajax veteran forward Wout Weghorst and PSV Eindhoven's Guus Til were the only Netherlands-based players named on Wednesday in the Dutch squad for the World Cup. It is the fewest ever at a major tournament from the big three of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord, with all previous World Cup squads having at least six players from the Dutch trio. Stefan de Vrij, Jeremie Frimpong and Kees Smit were left out and uncapped West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville was among the surprise names. "If he hadn't been injured in March, he would have been part of the squad already. He's effective on both the left and the right, is good on the ball and in transition," coach Ronald Koeman told a news conference.

Today, a similar shift is taking shape further east, and a new identity is emerging to capture it: Greater Whitefield.
