Polish president vetoes bill on social benefits for Ukrainians

Warsaw [Poland], August 26: Polish President Karol Nawrocki has vetoed a bill to extend social benefits for Ukrainian refugees.
Nawrocki argued that only refugees working in the country should receive support, suggesting the bill does not reflect the societal debate on this topic.
In Poland, Ukrainian citizens with protected status are entitled to the equivalent of €180 ($210) per month in child benefit per child. For the second and each additional child, there is also a childcare allowance of €117 per month for the first two years.
Refugees also have free access to the education system and health care, putting them on an equal footing with Polish families.
The bill, which passed with the votes of the centre-left coalition of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, provided for the refugees to continue receiving these social benefits until March 2026.
Nawrocki, who is close to the conservative nationalist opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, has openly proclaimed his intention to block Tusk's policies.
