Republican senators seek to advance Trump policies

Washington [US], December 5: The plan was outlined by Senator John Thune, the Republican leader in the next Senate term, in a closed party meeting on December 3, which included a call from Mr. Trump.
The first bill under consideration would focus on border security, defense spending and energy deregulation, Thune said, while the second bill would extend tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed during Trump's first term.
Mr Thune described the new plan as "options that all of our members are considering". To enact Mr Trump's agenda, the Senate will have to work closely with the president-elect and the House, where Republicans are expected to hold a narrow majority.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Chad Chronister of Hillsborough County, Florida (USA) announced on December 3 that he would withdraw from President-elect Trump's nomination for the position of Director of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Some Trump supporters have criticized Chronister's nomination, citing his arrest of a Florida pastor for violating Covid-19-related lockdown orders in 2020, according to Reuters.
With the above decision, Mr. Chronister became the second person to withdraw after being nominated by Mr. Trump to hold a position in the upcoming US government.
