Riot police clear Paris theatre occupied by migrants

Mar 19, 2025

Paris [France], March 19: Riot police forcibly cleared more than 400 young migrants from a Paris theatre on Tuesday, ending an occupation that had lasted about three months.
Some 200 demonstrators gathered outside the Gaîte Lyrique theatre in central Paris to protest the operation, attempting to block police from entering. Authorities reported 46 arrests during the clashes, Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez said.
Nine people sustained minor injuries, including seven migrants, one police officer, and a journalist. Media reports described officers using tear gas and batons, while protesters responded by throwing objects.
The occupation of the Gaîte Lyrique, a venue known for hosting performances, exhibitions and workshops, had evolved into a contentious political issue in France. The venue initially welcomed the group - mainly composed of African migrants - in early December for an event on French refugee policy, granting them free admission. (DPA)
