Spain recalls ambassador to Israel as diplomatic rift widens over Iran attacks

Mar 12, 2026

Madrid [Spain], March 12: Spain has recalled its ambassador to Israel, Ana Salomon, according to an entry in the official gazette from Wednesday, as relations sour over the US-Israeli attacks on Iran.
Salomon had already been recalled to Madrid for consultations in September after Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused Spain of an anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic campaign.
Spain is one of the harshest European critics of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip and Spain imposed sanctions on Israel.
The Spanish government is also supportive of Palestinian rights and has recognized Palestine as a state. Sanchez has expressed criticism of the ongoing US-Israeli attacks on Iran, calling them a violation of international law. (DPA)
