Thousands homeless after fire ravages more than 1,500 shanties in Dhaka

Dhaka [Bangladesh], November 27: A fire at one of the largest slums in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka has destroyed more than 1,500 shanties, firefighting officials said on Wednesday, leaving thousands homeless.
The fire broke out at the Korail slum in Dhaka's Mohakhali area on Tuesday evening. Tajul Islam Chowdhury, who led the firefighting efforts, said it took 19 fire engines nearly 16 hours to extinguish the fire, with operations concluding on Wednesday morning. Chowdhury said an estimated 1,500 shanties were gutted or damaged in the densely populated slum.
He added that the blaze left several thousand people homeless, and that the exact extent of the damage will only be determined after a full investigation. The cause of the fire is not yet known. (DPA)
