US confirms handover of bases in Syria

Apr 19, 2026

Damascus [Syria] / Washington [US], April 19: The US military has completed the handover of all major bases in Syria, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Friday. US forces continue to support partner-led counterterrorism efforts to ensure security in the region, a CENTCOM spokesman said in response to a request for comment.
Syria's government had earlier announced the full withdrawal of US troops stationed in the country. The Foreign Ministry in Damascus said on Thursday that the military facilities where US troops were previously present in Syria had been completely handed over to the Syrian government. The US military had fought in Syria for years alongside Kurdish-led forces against Islamic State.
