US Supreme Court blocks deportation of Venezuelans

Apr 20, 2025

Washington DC [US], April 20: The US Supreme Court temporarily blocked the deportation of dozens of Venezuelans in an order issued on Saturday.
Two of the nine judges - Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito - dissented from the ruling, which did not provide reasons as is normal in urgent cases. The ruling blocks the deportations "until further order of this court." The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) made an urgent application to the court on Friday to halt the imminent deportations from Texas.
According to media reports, they were to have been flown to El Salvador in Central America.
The Venezuelans are accused of being members of the Tren de Aragua criminal organization.
The ACLU said the men had not been afforded due process. It was not clear from the Supreme Court ruling how much time the Venezuelans would be granted to contest the deportation.
The administration of President Donald Trump, which has pursued a hard line on immigration since taking office in January, has not commented.
