New polls if Trump secures 60-day ceasefire with Putin: Zelensky

Oct 12, 2026

Kiev [Ukraine], October 12: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has responded with a counter-offer after US President Donald Trump demanded he step down, saying he would be willing to hold new elections if Trump could secure a full 60-day ceasefire with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky said in an interview with US broadcaster ABC that Ukraine would need time to organize new elections, but that the security of his citizens during any vote would have to be guaranteed.
His regular term of office expired on May 20, 2024. But under martial law, the president's term has been extended indefinitely under the constitution, as new elections are not possible during times of war.
Zelensky has also repeatedly pointed out that Ukrainians in the parts of the country occupied by Russia would also have to be able to participate freely in any elections.
"These people simply cannot find a way to stop Putin," he said. It was therefore easier to put pressure on others than to stop the Russian president, he added.
"Russia feels no pressure, simply wants to keep going," Zelensky said.
